Railroad Spikes – Traditional Hoodoo Protection
In old-time Hoodoo, iron is known as a powerful enemy to harmful spirits and crossed conditions. Railroad spikes — driven deep into the earth to hold steady the path of travel — are used in rootwork for protection, domination over negativity, and to keep one’s road firm and secure.
These spikes carry the spirit of movement and the force of iron. What is meant to hold the tracks steady can also hold your protection steady.
How They Are Worked
Four Corner Protection (Old Southern Method)
Drive or place one spike into each corner of your yard or property while praying Psalm 23 or Psalm 91. This sets a boundary line that keeps out enemies, harmful spirits, gossip, and crossed work. If you live in an apartment, place one spike in each corner inside the home, near walls or concealed.
Candle & Altar Work
Railroad spikes are often placed beside protection candles or used in road-opening work. You may anoint the spike with protection oil, Fiery Wall oil, or a blend of salt and Florida Water before prayer. Stand it beside your candle to anchor the work and command stability in your intention.
Travel Protection
Carrying iron while traveling is an old protective custom. Keep a spike in your vehicle — wrapped in cloth or placed discreetly — and pray over it for safe travels and clear roads. As the railroad clears its path, so shall yours be kept clear.
Breaking Crossed Conditions
Some workers place a spike at the front door to pin down harmful energy or spiritually “nail down” their protection. Iron is said to trouble wandering spirits and block spiritual attack.Spiritual Correspondences
